Carlinville Team to Climb for Charity

Enquirer Democrat - Brenna McDermott - 18 Jan, 2012
Sixty members will climb 32 flights of stairs - Gathered in the basement of Karen Geninatti's home, a dozen women stood bent over, sweat pouring down their faces, breathing heavily. Some leaned against weight equipment, others against the purple and gold walls of Geninatti Gym. They don’t have long to lean. They and about 50 others form the Geninatti Gym team, and they will climb the 32 flights of stairs at the Hilton Hotel in Springfield, Saturday, Feb. 18, and every step and every breath will help raise money to eliminate lung disease. Geninatti's team will likely be the biggest at the 2012 Fight For Air Climb, and it will be the third year she's done this climb. The team has already raised $1,000 and has a goal of raising $6,000. ...

Chris Maguire nears the base camp at Mount Everest

Larne Today - 17 Jan, 2012
A Larne adventurer has scaled new heights in a bid to raise vital funds for an African charity. Chris Maguire, a 53-year-old painter and decorator, was part of a 20-strong group of parishioners from various churches in East Antrim and Belfast who embarked on a gruelling trek up the slopes of Mount Everest. A member of Whitewell Metropolitan Tabernacle, Chris and his fellow climbers walked up to nine hours a day for a week to reach the base camp of the world's tallest mountain - an altitude of almost 19,000 feet. But the epic task was well worth it in the end, as the father-of-two raised a whopping £7,500 for his chosen charity - a hospice for sick and disabled children in Tanzania. Back in 2008, Chris raised £5,000 for the same charity by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak. "I want to say a big thank you to everyone who donated to the cause. The generosity of local people has been amazing and I just can't get over it," said Chris, who was inspired to take up the challenge after speaking to a member of his congregation. "A woman asked me to sponsor her climb up Mount Kilimanjaro, and at that moment I just decided to give it a go for myself. After I completed Kilimanjaro, Everest seemed like the next ...

Pals scoop prize to climb Kilimanjaro for charity

Sunday Sun - 15 Jan, 2012
Glen McCloy asked his mates if they fancied a pint . . . at the top of Kilimanjaro. Not the usual place for a swift half, the firefighters will be climbing to the top of the African mountain at the end of the month. The trip comes courtesy of the Carling Perfect Pint competition where entrants said where they'd most like to have a drink. And although Glen was delighted when he got the call to say he'd won, his next thought was the very difficult decision he'd have to make. He originally thought the £15,000 prize would stretch to taking four friends from the fire brigade, but in fact he realised he'd have to choose only two to go along with him on the trip of a lifetime. The trio will be raising money for Pearl of Africa choir, which annually comes to the North East to perform and raise money for the Molly and Paul Child Care Foundation in Uganda. ...
