The BCIT Med Lab Staff are proud and excited to be participating in this year's Take a Hike Foundation's Moonlight Snowshoe Challenge! The event will raise funds to get at-risk youth outside to experience adventure-based learning. We can't think of a better way to get kids out, active, and building confidence.
The Moonlight Snowshoe will take place at Mount Seymour, February 26, 2013 from 5:30-9:30pm. We'll be participating in the snowshoe challenge to get a taste of the program the youth go through on Mt Seymour.
We've set a goal to raise $3,000, which will go towards equipment and course development for Take a Hike. We hope you'll join us in supporting this great cause - please donate!
Take a Hike is a full-time alternative education program in Vancouver, BC that engages at-risk youth through a unique combination of adventure-based learning, academics, therapy, and community involvement.
Adventure-based learning is a critical component of the Take a Hike program. Teaching staff will guide at-risk youth through outdoor adventures that require increasingly complex skills.
These adventure-based learning activities focus on real-life situations and experiences, which require problem solving, peer dependence, goal setting, leadership, and commitment. The students gain constructive and character-building experiences as they conquer what can appear to be overwhelming personal challenges.
Counselling staff is present on all outings, which provide them with regular opportunities to counsel at-risk Vancouver youth on how to identify and take responsibility for their feelings and actions.
